#191  Ugli Fruit & Banana

with Honey

The Citric Week, Recipe 1

After two days off because of Christmas, here we are back to our recipes, and starting a new week where every juice will carry at least one citric ingredient.

I'm excited to have found at the grocery a citric fruit that I had never seen before. It's called Ugli Fruit (that's correct: Ugli with "i", not "y"). It's a Jamaican fruit, similar to a gigantic tangerine with a green peel (see picture below). It has a very thick skin, but still easy to remove, as it happens with the tangerine's. It's quite acidic. I wonder if they called the fruit "ugli" because it's supposed to be ugly. The one I bought is not ugly at all; just odd, because of its size. The interior, indeed, with its huge segments, is really beautiful.

The juice came out quite good. The banana and honey helped neutralizing a bit the acidity of the fruit.

Ugli Fruit & Banana
with Honey

Ingredients
• 1/3 of Ugli Fruit (4 segments, 4.62 oz), washed, peeled, white skin removed, seeds removed, segments cut in half  (48.47 Cal)
• 1 Banana, washed, peeled, sliced (3.07 oz) (77.43 Cal)
• 1 tbsp of Honey (64 Cal)
• 4 cubes of Ice*
• 1 cup of Water

How to Prepare It
Put all the ingredients inside the cup of a small blender (or the single serve cup of a regular blender) and mix everything for around 1 minute. For a better result, put 2 ice cubes in the bottom of the cup and 2 after the ugli fruit.

Ugli Fruit & Banana

#187 Green & Red Juice + White Smoothie:
another Christmas suggestion

Kale, Avocado, Frozen Strawberries & Banana

with Lime Juice and Vanilla Ice Cream

Decorative and yummy

Christmas Week, Recipe 2

Our second recipe inspired by Christmas is a three-layer juice that mixes fruit, vegetables and... ice cream! And, believe it or not, yes, kale can go well with ice cream.

I started drinking each layer individually, with the help of a straw, but close to the end I mixed everything and was surprised to find such a nice flavor in such a strange combination. The straw also helped me with the excess of ice (necessary to keep the layers from mixing immediately). I didn't need to remove it, as I did yesterday, because the straw allowed me to drink the juice without needing to eat the ice together.

Juice #187

This recipe makes 3½ cups (28 fl.oz.)
Total Calories = 265.38, approximately
Calories per Cup = 75.82, approximately

Kale, Avocado, Frozen Strawberries & Banana
with Lime Juice and Vanilla Ice Cream

Ingredients
• 1 leaf (large) of Kale, washed, spine removed, torn into small pieces (1.34 oz) (18.62 Cal)
• ½ Avocado (small), washed, peeled, cut in pieces (1.09 oz) (49.6 Cal)
• 2 tsp Lime Juice, bottled, 100% natural (2.66 Cal)
• ¾ cup of frozen Strawberries (50 Cal)
• ½ Banana, peeled, cut in pieces (1.76 oz) (44.5 Cal)
• ½ cup of Vanilla Ice Cream (100 Cal)
• 3 cubes of Ice*
• 2 cups of crushed Ice
• 1½ cup of Water

Prepare the Green Juice
1. Put 2 cubes of ice, the kale, avocado, 1 tsp of lime juice and ½ cup of water inside the cup of a small blender (or the single serve cup of a regular blender) and mix everything for around 30 seconds.
2. Pour the juice into a container and put it aside.
3. Rinse the blender's cup.

Prepare the Red Juice
1. Put the strawberries and 1 cup of water inside the rinsed blender's cup and mix everything for around 30 seconds.
2. Pour the juice into a container and put it aside.
3. Rinse the blender's cup.

Prepare the White Smoothie
Put 1 cube of ice, the banana, the ice cream and 1 tsp of lime juice inside the rinsed blender's cup and mix everything for around 30 seconds.

"Assemble" your Juice
1. Stir the green juice and pour it into a large 28-oz container.
2. Put 1 cup of crushed ice carefully on top of the juice (if you followed the recipe, your green juice should be thick enough to hold the ice on top of it).
3. Stir the red juice and pour it on top of the ice very slowly, so that it doesn't go immediately through the ice layer.
4. Put a second cup of crushed ice carefully on top of the red juice (if you followed the recipe, your red juice will hold the ice just enough, though not as well as the green juice).
5. Stir the white smoothie and pour it on top of the ice slowly (it will start filtering through the ice quite immediately, but slowly enough to not completely mix with the red layer).
6. You can enhance the visual of your juice with some Christmas decoration.
7. With the help of a straw, you can create some color swirls (see picture).

*Note 1: The ice helps to better grind the ingredients.
Note 2: You don't need (and shouldn't) stray this juice.

Suco Verde & Vermelho + Vitamina Branca:
outra sugestão para o Natal

Couve, Abacate, Morangos Congelados & Banana

com Sumo de Limão Taiti e Sorvete de Baunilha

Decorativo e gostoso

Semana do Natal, Receita 2

Couve, Abacate, Morangos Congelados & Banana
com Sumo de Limão Taiti e Sorvete de Baunilha

Ingredients

3. Enxágue o copo do liquidificador.

Prepare o Suco Vermelho
3. Enxágue o copo do liquidificador.

Prepare a Vitamina Branca

#185  Banana, Raspberries & Apple

The Banana Week, Recipe 7

As it seems to happen to all juices that have raspberries or blackberries as an ingredient, this also has a somewhat "wild" flavor. It is a little bit acid, so it could use some natural sweetener or even sugar (for those who don't mind eating sugar). It's a flavorful juice, with a gorgeous color.

This was unexpectedly good (for me). I didn't actually believe that banana and broccoli could turn into a good combination, but gosh, was I wrong. This juice is really tasty, and a touch of mint would probably make it just perfect!

#182  Banana, Watermelon, Cantaloupe & Honeydew Melon

Still another gorgeous color, but... this did not work!

The Banana Week, Recipe 4

Maybe the fruit in the fridge were not quite fresh (I had bought one of those large cups with mixed fruit in it, last week, and still had some left, so I decided to use them), or maybe it's just a case of a bad combination of ingredients. I can't tell it for sure. The fact is, this juice did NOT taste good, at least for MY taste. If you want to try it, just go ahead and do so, but I would rather advise you to try one of the many other delicious recipes in this blog!

#179     Banana & Avocado

with Lemon Juice, Coconut Water and Honey

The Banana Week, Recipe 1

We are starting today the Banana Week. I chose banana because it's a fruit I have used very barely so far for my recipes. As you may know (I mentioned it somewhere in the previous posts), banana has a very dominant taste, and that's why I don't generally use it as an ingredient. This week it will be different, since banana will be the main ingredient and, consequently, we should expect it to be the dominant flavor.

I first prepared the juice today with 1 cup of water, but it resulted a bit too thick and acid. I added an extra cup to the juice already blended and it tasted 100% better (for my taste naturally). You can try it the original way and, if you agree with my first impression, just start adding water until you find the right taste and consistency for you.

Banana & Abacate

A friend of mine requested Lime juices. Well, this is not exactly a juice, but actually a smoothie with the always delicious Vanilla ice cream. Not the best for those who are trying to keep their calories down, but great for those who are looking for a magnificently flavorful beverage.

#72 Kiwi, Peach & Banana

So I was still not totally convinced, and decided to try it again...

I'm talking about bananas. I used an even smaller piece, this time, and voila! The juice tasted... banana! Okay, okay, I think it's a lost case. I mean, I'll keep using banana, of course, but only when I want a juice with a prominent banana flavor.

#70     Pineapple, Kale & Banana

with Coconut Water

The other day I was telling you about how bananas have a very dominant flavor. Today I decided to try a very low proportion of banana (compared to the amount of the other ingredients). I wanted some sweetness to neutralize the acidity of the pineapple, but I still wanted a dominance of the pineapple flavor. Conclusion: you shouldn't use banana to add sweetness only. It WILL add, also, a strong flavor, even if used in a small proportion.

That said, the juice came out absolutely delicious (for those who like bananas), sweet and low in calories!

Abacaxi, Couve & Banana
